We have owned 2 of these. They make incredible coffee, but the plastic parts on the inside do wear out if you use the machine "a lot"... with "a lot" being 2-3 drinks a day. We had our first machine fail in the first month, the steam system on it blew a big hole in the plastic case. Our second unit made it about 18 months, and a big hole blew in the plastic compressor on it.
If they made the insides out of metal, odds are they'd last longer, and I'd give the system a much higher review. I love my machine, I just wish it lasted longer for what you pay for it.

Purchased this for our christmas present...Love it....expresso everyday...the perfect afternoon pick-up. The instant hot water dispenser is great for extra water for a full cup of coffee or for making tea. Steamming milk is a breeze for hot chocolate and faster than the stove top and no saucepan to wash! I steam heat other liquids that have gotten cold as well...prefer it to the microwave. The water holding tank is a fantastic idea, love it.

I was hesitant to buy this and almost bought a big name brand espresso machine. In the end I needed a model easy enough for my wife to use and this fit the requirement. We have been using this for 2 months now every day making about 3-6 drinks per day. It has been so nice to make drinks at home and it has paid for itself with the money we have saved from going out. Make sure to buy extra cleaning tablets as it only comes with 2 in the sample. Pick up some Saeco tablets if you can't find the same brand, they work as well too. The water filter lasts 2 months so pick up some extra because only 1 is in the box. Perform the cleaning cycles and take care of it per instructions and it should last a long time.

I'll admit, I'm no expert. But I know what I like. And I love this machine! We've had it for a month and we went through 3 lbs of beans already! Well, including all the friends that come over for a shot. :)
If you're looking for a good cup of your favorite drinks and you haven't been working at Starbucks the last five years, then this Breville is for you. You don't want that pricy fully automatic, you want this baby. If you don't have counterspace to spare to have a good grinder, then this is a no brainer too. The only thing I'd wish for on this is a hot water dispenser. But since real estate in this form factor is a premium and you have to pick between the grinder or the water, pick the grinder. You can always get hot water from your kettle if you need to. At first you can start with the dual walled filters (which do a great job) but it's not rocket science and you will switch to single walled filters and play with grind settings and tamping in no time. Just because you can, unlike those fully automatics...
Go ahead. Buy it. You know you want to.

I bought this recently for my partner, knowing nothing about espresso machines. A quick online search turned out this as a great beginner machine. I know next to nothing about making espressos, and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was.
After using it, I have to agree. Super simple to use. We bought the E.S.E pods for coffee, put it in the cup thingie, attached it to the machine, and within 30 seconds we had hot rich delicious espresso. The milk frother/foam bit works super fast as well, made tons of foam, more than enough for the amount of coffee.
The coolest bit in my opinion was that it came with 2 stainless steel espresso cups with stainless steel saucers. AS well as the milk jug to make the foam.
Stupid rookie mistake of the day though: I thought it wasn't enough coffee so I made 2 packages of espresso, and ended up having the shakes. Its definitely not watery drip coffee, or Timmys or Starbucks. This is on its own league.
Also its made out of good long lasting materials, the machine doesn't look like it'll fall apart anytime soon.
My only complaint is that the switch at the front (that makes the machine make foam or espresso) is actually really hard to turn. Not sure if its lack of use.. after a couple of tries it was a bit easier, but it still required what it seemed like a lot of strength to turn it.

Don't even bother buying this useless piece of junk. If you want a great cap/latte machine, you have to spend the big dollars. Steamer on this model takes too long to steam as the espresso shot gets cold.

This machine does all you would want an espresso machine to do. I do not claim to be a barista but I did own
a Saeco Via Venetia for many years ... and I see absolutely no difference in the results. The Cuisinart seems to
be well built ... all the buttons and switches have a very solid feel about them ... and the case appears to be
brushed metal not plastic but I really can't tell ... and to my eyes at least is very attractive ... all my friends
who saw it thought it cost a real lot more then I paid ... Its not very noisy and the frothing wand works well also
... and it does use pods for those so inclined ... at this price point (~150CDN)its a very nice buy!
A thoughtful touch from Cuisinart was including a metal frothing cup which saves the end user a fair bit of money. The enclosed
tamping tool works but some people might want to get a better one as made out of plastic and is a bit clumsy to hold...
but it was included and it does work ... The machine has a three year guarantee which is really very nice so if you
are in the market for a highly functional espresso machine I suggest that you take a look at the Cuisinart. Not a big
name in the espresso game but big time results ...
Recent Update:
Concerning the water temp for making espresso ... I made the mistake of making espresso with the steam/hot water button set on the hot water setting ... since there are only two icons I presumed that was the correct one .... the steam/hot water knob actually has THREE positions ... the middle UNMARKED setting is used for espresso ... but for some reason there is no marker to show that position. If u keep the knob at the hot water setting it will produce approximately 80ish degree Celsius water (not hot enough) while making espresso ... if u set the knob in the center (espresso) position while making espresso the water temp will be correct at approximately 90ish Celsius. (Experimental error prevents perfectly accurate water temp measurement because we cant measure it inside the filter basket.)
So do check to make sure u have set the steam/hot water button to the right place to make espresso ... believe me i read the instructions many times ... but i certainly missed that small detail. OMG

I used a Gaggia Baby for ~7 years, but a thermister eventually died on it and it was always a bit leaky, etc. Got this one on sale at a local Home Hardware because I needed a replacement fast and cheap. It's served well for at least 5 years, and with care, produces good coffee.
It is somewhat temperamental though. you have to get the grind and tamp just right. grind a bit coarse or under-tamped and you get under-extracted piss. if the grind is even a tiny bit too fine or you tense up on the tamp, it'll just pump and pump and produce nothing. I interpret this to mean that it can just barely manage the pressure for proper extraction, which is hard to criticize for a mass-market, cheap device. temperature control is not the greatest - you need to find a sequence of foaming and espresso that works for you, since the pressure block can overheat and overextract if you let it sit (cheap bimetallic thermostat, probably, not digital or PID.)
the drain tray is OK, though it's not obvious when it needs draining until it overflows onto the counter. reservoir is adequate, though not huge. easy enough to fill and monitor.
obviously, it's been very reliable, though I use it at least twice a day: for expresso and steaming milk. I've thought of getting another one to have on hand as a backup, but it's more tempting to get a higher-end one, and keep this as backup...

I've purchased this espresso machine 3 years ago, and it's working flawlessly since then.
Coffee is perfect, hot, lots of crema, every single time. =))
The gauge is quite handy (it tells me if my coffee is too fine, or if I put too much pressure).
Sturdy, well build, what more can I ask?
Okay, okay, the steam air (for frothing the milk) could be a little stronger, but I'm an espresso guy, not a cappuccino one, so I don't care.
(It's not that bad, anyway...)
Overall, in my humble opinion, the best espresso machine I've used over years of espresso loving madness. =))

I've had this machine for about 3 weeks now. This is my first espresso machine so I don't really have any others to compare it to. The machine comes fully assembled and ready to use out of the box.
It heats up quickly and makes a great Espresso every time, I have been using the pre-programmed settings for the single and double shots and it comes out great with a nice crema.
Used both a medium espresso grind as well as a preground coffee that I originally bought for a drip coffee machine, both types made great espresso.
The milk forther is very nice, easy to use, and quick to steam.
As one of the other reviewers mentioned cleaning is a breeze for all components which is a huge plus.
Got this refurbished on buy.com for $150, which is an amazing deal for this machine.
Haven't had any issues with any of the components so far.

We have been using this for 2 months now every day making about 3-6 drinks per day. It has been so nice to make drinks at home and it has paid for itself with the money we have saved from going out. Make sure to buy extra cleaning tablets as it only comes with 2 in the sample. Pick up some Saeco tablets if you can't find the same brand, they work as well too. The water filter lasts 2 months so pick up some extra because only 1 is in the box. Perform the cleaning cycles and take care of it per instructions and it should last a long time.

I'll admit, I'm no expert. But I know what I like. And I love this machine! We've had it for a month and we went through 3 lbs of beans already! Well, including all the friends that come over for a shot. :)
If you're looking for a good cup of your favorite drinks and you haven't been working at Starbucks the last five years, then this Breville is for you. You don't want that pricy fully automatic, you want this baby. If you don't have counterspace to spare to have a good grinder, then this is a no brainer too. The only thing I'd wish for on this is a hot water dispenser. But since real estate in this form factor is a premium and you have to pick between the grinder or the water, pick the grinder. You can always get hot water from your kettle if you need to. At first you can start with the dual walled filters (which do a great job) but it's not rocket science and you will switch to single walled filters and play with grind settings and tamping in no time. Just because you can, unlike those fully automatics...
Go ahead. Buy it. You know you want to.
